The Walls Have Angels

This is the title poem from my latest collection

The Walls Have Angels

The walls have angels

Who come at us airily
bringing fire with them
in the shape of rivers

Who manifest themselves
through the mineral light
of chrysanthemums
the earthly powders
of copper and bronze

Whose Latin is fluent but mute

Who are visible in attitudes
of rarity especially
to young men in the afternoon

Who shine like the rain

Who gild their eyelids ma non troppo
and never panic
but rejoice unbearably

Who stand at our backs
pointing spears
like a troop of hallelujahs
or the thirteen moons of Neptune
almoners and hypnagogues

Bringers of pity and shock
